About GMI files
The .gmi extension serves two distinct, unrelated communities: gaming and the 'small web.'
First, in the context of the MMORPG Knight Online, a .gmi file is a proprietary texture asset used for the game's user interface (UI) and item icons. These files are essentially containers for raster graphics (often similar to DDS or BMP) but cannot be opened by standard image viewers like Windows Photos or Adobe Photoshop. Players and modders looking to extract game assets, customize the UI, or archive game art must convert these files to standard formats like PNG or JPG. Because the format is specific to the game engine, standard conversion software often fails, requiring specialized community-made tools like ko-dxt-to-png.
Second, in the technical world, .gmi stands for Gemtext, the native hypertext format of the Gemini protocol. Unlike the heavy HTML of the modern web, Gemtext is a lightweight, line-oriented format similar to Markdown. Users frequently need to convert Gemtext files to HTML to make them viewable in standard browsers (Chrome, Edge) or to PDF for printing and archiving. While Gemini browsers like Lagrange open them natively, converting them allows for broader distribution outside the Gemini ecosystem.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GMI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GMI file to HTML, HTM, CSS, JS, PHP, ASP, ASPX, JSP, JSPX, PY, RB or PL, you can use Knight Online or similar software from the "Game UI Texture" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RSS, CSS, CGI, SITEMAP, PL, WEBMANIFEST, JSON, JS, XML, HTML, ICO or HTM files to GMI, try Knight Online or another comparable tool in the "Game UI Texture" category.
The GMI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GMI converter.
