In other software environments, it serves as a proprietary 3D model format utilized by developers like Cypron Studios and games such as Perfect World's Audition Online. Additionally, industrial engineering software uses .gm2 for completely different purposes: it can be a Gerber PCB mechanical layer generated by Altium Designer, or measurement data inside Metrologic Group's metrology software.
The primary disadvantage of the .gm2 format is its extreme fragmentation. Because multiple, entirely unrelated programs use the exact same file extension, your operating system will rarely know how to open it. The 3D model variants are proprietary, locked to specific game engines, and typically require outdated versions of 3ds Max to view. They are not natively supported by modern web browsers, standard 3D software, or standard OS viewers.
To make these files usable, you must convert them based on their internal data. For game saves, you need to extract the underlying GZIP archive to access the raw data files. For 3D models, converting to OBJ or FBX is strictly required to edit them in modern 3D software like Blender.
