The .GCA extension serves multiple distinct purposes, creating a frequent headache for users trying to identify the correct software. The most common variety (approx. 40%) is a Garmin Configuration Archive generated by Garmin avionics systems. These files serve as containers for system logs, flight data, and configuration settings transferred via the Garmin Connext ecosystem. While essential for avionics maintenance, the proprietary .GCA extension prevents standard file explorers from opening them, even though they are internally structured as standard ZIP archives. Users often need to access the text logs or XML data inside for reporting or debugging, necessitating a conversion to ZIP or extraction to viewable formats like TXT or PDF.
Another significant variation is the Game Character Archive, used by engines like System-NTR Filmoa to bundle character assets.
