About GAS files
The .gas file extension creates significant confusion because it serves two distinct, incompatible ecosystems: vintage PC gaming and modern geochemical science.
1. Game Attribute Scripts: Most commonly, this is a Generic Attribute System file used by Gas Powered Games titles like Dungeon Siege. These are essentially plain text files that define game logic, unit stats, and world parameters. The friction arises because the OS does not recognize the extension, forcing users to manually select a text editor. Converting these to TXT or PDF allows for easier sharing, modding, and archiving of game data without risking file corruption.
2. Geochemical Data: In the scientific sector, .gas files are generated by REFLEX ioGAS (now part of IMDEX). These are sophisticated data analysis containers, often essentially ZIP archives holding geochemical datasets. Users without a $3000+ subscription cannot open them. A practical workaround is to rename the extension to ZIP to extract the internal contents, or convert the raw data - if accessible - to CSV or XLSX for use in Microsoft Excel.
3. Legacy Archives: Rarely, you may encounter resource archives from older Visual Basic tools like the Gasify simulation suite. These are proprietary and difficult to access without the original legacy software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GAS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The GAS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GAS converter.
