About PGT files

The .pgt extension is a classic example of file format collision, where multiple unrelated software vendors use the same three letters for entirely different purposes.

  1. Game Texture Archives (Mega Man X8): Approximately 16% of these files are texture containers used in Mega Man X8 by Capcom. These are proprietary archives (often containing .TIM2 or TM2 textures) that standard image viewers cannot read. They require specialized extraction tools to unpack into viewable PNG or TGA files.
  2. Picture Collage Templates: Another common source is Picture Collage Maker by PearlMountain. In this context, the file functions like a PSD, storing layer data, photo positioning, and text layouts. The practical constraint here is proprietary lock-in; you cannot upload a .pgt template to Facebook or print it at a kiosk. You must open it in the original software and export it to a standard JPG or PDF.
  3. Pokémon Mystery Gift Data: For gamers, a .pgt file often represents a "Mystery Gift" distribution file (Pokémon Gift Template) used in Gen 4 and 5 Pokémon games. These are tiny binary files (often exactly 260 bytes) used to inject events into save files via tools like PKHeX.
  4. Corporate ID Cards: In enterprise environments, .pgt files are template designs for Datacard ID Works (now Entrust) used to print employee badges.

Because of this fragmentation, there is no "universal" viewer. Your best conversion strategy depends entirely on the file's origin: convert game archives to ZIP or images for access, and convert collage templates to PDF for archiving.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PGT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
