The .FUK file format serves two main purposes in the gaming industry: it acts as a proprietary Game Data Archive for titles like Euro Truck Simulator 2 and Total War: Shogun 2, and it functions as a compiled level map for the controversial games Postal 2 and Postal 3.
Players and modders typically interact with these files using specific engine-level tools. For example, Postal 2 maps are built on a modified version of the Unreal Engine and can be opened using the proprietary Postal 2 Editor (based on UnrealEd). Archive variants require community-built unpackers specific to SCS Software or Creative Assembly games.
The main disadvantage of the .FUK format is its heavily closed, proprietary nature. These files often exceed several gigabytes, bundling unindexed assets like 3D models, audio, and textures. You cannot open them with standard archive utilities like ZIP or RAR extractors, and editing them directly in a text editor will corrupt the game.
Modders usually need to convert or extract the contents of .FUK files into standard targets like PNG or DDS for textures, and OBJ or FBX for 3D meshes. Unfortunately, standard online converters fail to process them because the internal compression algorithms are completely undocumented.
