About AQ files

The .AQ file format generally serves one of two distinct purposes: it is either a proprietary genealogy family tree data file associated with Family Tree Maker and Ancestral Quest, or it is a protected executable library packed by Anthem Quest software protection. Occasionally, it also appears as a game data file in the Godot Engine.

The major disadvantage of .AQ genealogy files is that they are closed-source, proprietary databases. You cannot easily open them on modern web browsers, mobile devices, or competing software without paying for expensive legacy software licenses. Similarly, .AQ files acting as protected executables are intentionally obfuscated to prevent reverse engineering, making them impossible to run on non-Windows systems natively or inspect easily.

If your .AQ file contains genealogy data, the ultimate conversion target is the universal GED (GEDCOM) format, which allows you to import your family history into virtually any modern genealogy platform like Ancestry.com or MyHeritage. If the file is a protected executable or Godot Engine asset, conversion is generally not applicable, though extracting the internal payload may be necessary.

Standard online converters usually fail with .AQ files because the format lacks public documentation and is heavily fragmented. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AQ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FTM, FTW and FTMB files.

The AQ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AQ converter.
