The .AQ file format generally serves one of two distinct purposes: it is either a proprietary genealogy family tree data file associated with Family Tree Maker and Ancestral Quest, or it is a protected executable library packed by Anthem Quest software protection. The major disadvantage of .AQ genealogy files is that they are closed-source, proprietary databases. You cannot easily open them on modern web browsers, mobile devices, or competing software without paying for expensive legacy software licenses.
