About FRE files

A .FRE file is most commonly a proprietary CT scanner image data file generated by the GE Healthcare Advantage Workstation. Medical professionals use these files to store and analyze multi-slice tomography data. Other software systems also use the .FRE extension, including Brazilian CVM corporate reference forms (which are actually ZIP archives), Anytone radio frequency programming software, and Jeppesen FliteStar flight planning routes. The main disadvantage of the .FRE format is its severe lack of interoperability. Because it is a proprietary medical imaging format, patients and doctors cannot open it on a standard PC, Mac, or mobile device without installing expensive, specialized workstation software. The files are often large and completely unsupported by standard image viewers or web browsers. To view or share these scans, you must convert them. For archiving and importing into standard hospital PACS systems, convert .FRE to DICOM. For general viewing by patients or embedding in standard web documents, convert to JPG or PNG.
