The .FRE extension represents a collision of highly specific, incompatible data types, creating significant friction for users. The dominant format (64%) is a CT Scanner Image generated by GE Healthcare Advantage Workstation systems. These are proprietary, raw voxel data files containing high-resolution anatomical scans. The main problem is vendor lock-in: unlike standard DICOM files, .FRE files cannot be opened by generic medical viewers or standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop. Users essentially possess medical data they cannot visualize without converting it to DICOM for analysis or JPG/PDF for easy sharing.
However, a significant minority (10%) are Brazilian Corporate Reference Forms submitted to the CVM. These create confusion because they are technically just ZIP archives with a changed extension. Users frequently struggle to open them because their OS treats them as unknown binaries rather than folders. For the GE medical variant, the best conversion target is DICOM (to preserve medical metadata) or PNG (for lossless visual inspection).
