About FOX files

The .FOX extension represents a collision of legacy software and proprietary data formats, most commonly serving as a compiled program file for the discontinued Microsoft Visual FoxPro (or its predecessor FoxBASE+). These files contain bytecode derived from source code, meaning they are binary blobs that cannot be opened or edited in standard text editors like Notepad++. Users often encounter these when migrating legacy database systems, finding that modern operating systems lack the runtime environment required to execute them.

A secondary but significant use case is the Foxmail email client by Tencent, which uses .FOX files to store email headers and folder structures. The frustration here is proprietary lock-in; users cannot easily drag these files into Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird to restore their correspondence.

For FoxPro files, conversion options are limited to hex dumps or text extraction for analysis. For Foxmail archives, the ideal target format is EML or MBOX to ensure long-term access to your emails. In gaming contexts (specifically the Fox Engine by Kojima Productions), these may be XML-based data files, in which case converting to JSON or plain TXT makes the data human-readable.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FOX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DBF, CSV, FXP, LBX and FKY files.

The FOX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FOX converter.
