About FOS files
The .FOS extension is primarily associated with Bethesda Game Studios as the standard saved game format for the Fallout series, including Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 4. These files store critical binary data - player stats, inventory, world state, and quest progress. A significant disadvantage of the .FOS format is its proprietary binary structure, which makes it impossible to read or modify using standard text editors like Notepad. Users looking to modify game values must convert or parse these files into editable formats like JSON or XML using third-party save editors. Additionally, .FOS files can suffer from "save bloat," exceeding 50MB, making them difficult to email or store; converting them to ZIP or 7Z archives is essential for backup and sharing on sites like Nexus Mods.
In industrial automation contexts, a .FOS file may be a project file for Fatek FStudio or Wecon HMI software. These are often standard ZIP containers in disguise; users can frequently access the internal assets by simply renaming the file to ZIP. Rarely, it may refer to a legacy Faroudja video file.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FOS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FOS file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use Fallout 4 or similar software from the "Video Game Save" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to FOS, try Fallout 4 or another comparable tool in the "Video Game Save" category.
The FOS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FOS converter.
