A .forge file is a proprietary game data archive used exclusively by Ubisoft video games built on the Anvil (formerly Scimitar) engine, such as the Assassin's Creed series, Rainbow Six Siege, and Prince of Persia. These containers act as massive virtual file systems, packing thousands of individual game assets - including 3D meshes, textures, scripts, and audio files - into a single, compressed volume to optimize loading times.
Because .forge files are strictly proprietary and often encrypted, they pose significant challenges for users wishing to access the content inside. They cannot be opened with standard archive utilities like 7-Zip or WinRAR, nor can they be imported directly into 3D software like Blender. The files frequently exceed several gigabytes in size, making them difficult to manage or share. Modders and artists typically need to convert or "unpack" these archives to standard formats to utilize the assets. For 3D modeling and mod creation, the goal is to convert the internal meshes to OBJ or FBX. Textures are best converted to DDS (DirectDraw Surface) for game engine re-import or PNG for editing in tools like Adobe Photoshop.
