About BF files

The .bf extension represents a split ecosystem of file types, creating frequent confusion for users. Primarily, it functions as a proprietary Game Data Archive or script container used by major developers like Atlus (for Shin Megami Tensei) and Ubisoft (for the Jade and UbiArt engines in titles like Prince of Persia and Just Dance). These files are binary containers - often referred to as 'BigFiles' - that bundle thousands of textures, audio clips, and logic scripts into a single unrecognizable blob to optimize loading times and prevent tampering. Users typically encounter these when attempting to mod games or extract assets like PNG textures or WAV audio, finding that standard archiving tools like WinRAR or 7-Zip cannot open them due to custom encryption or compression methods.

Alternatively, a .bf file may be a source code file for Brainfuck, an esoteric programming language notable for its extreme minimalism. These text-based files contain only eight specific characters (like < > + - [ ] . ,) and appear as gibberish to the untrained eye. While they are technically plain text, they require a specific interpreter to run or conversion to a readable language like C or Python to be understood by modern developers.

For game modding or asset recovery, the goal is to extract the contents. We recommend converting the internal assets to open standards: PNG or JPG for textures, MP3 or OGG for audio, and TXT for scripts. For Brainfuck code, converting the file to TXT allows for easy viewing in any editor, or converting to C prepares it for compilation.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TXT, PDF, ZIP, JPG, FORGE, BABY, DPLSAVE, LF, SF, CBM and MBF files.
