Convert FON to another file type

To convert your FON file to another format, you need Microsoft Windows or other Font software.

Convert a file to FON

To convert other file formats to the "Raster Font Library" file type, you need software like Microsoft Windows or a similar tool.

About FON files

A .FON file is a legacy Windows Bitmap Font library, historically used to render system text in environments like Windows 3.1, DOS, and early versions of the Windows GUI. Unlike modern vector fonts (TrueType or OpenType), .FON files are raster-based, meaning they are built from fixed grids of pixels rather than scalable mathematical paths.

While highly efficient for the low-resolution CRT monitors of the 1990s, users today face significant friction when handling .FON files. Because they consist of bitmap images at specific sizes (e.g., 8, 10, 12 points), they cannot be resized without severe pixelation or "jaggies." Furthermore, the file structure is technically a 16-bit Windows Executable (NE) container holding FNT resources, which often triggers security warnings or fails to open entirely on modern 64-bit operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS. They are also unsupported by modern web browsers and design suites like Adobe Illustrator.

To preserve these classic typefaces or use them in modern projects, conversion is essential. For general installation and use in word processors, convert .FON to TTF (TrueType) or OTF (OpenType); this process often requires "tracing" the bitmap into vectors. For web design, convert to WOFF or WOFF2.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FON file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TTF, FONT, BDF, OTF, TTC, JPG, RBXM, 3DXML, DLL, FLP, SDOCX, MSI and SYM files.

FAQ

If you want to convert FON file to TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2, EOT, SVG, BDF, PCF, FNT, PFM, AFM or PFB, you can use Microsoft Windows or similar software from the "Legacy Bitmap Font Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert UFO, WOFF, PFB, GXF, AFM, F3F, SFD, WOFF2, PSF, TTF, TXF or OTF files to FON, try Microsoft Windows or another comparable tool in the "Legacy Bitmap Font Storage" category.

The FON Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FON converter.
