About BMAP files

The .BMAP file extension is highly fragmented and used for several completely distinct technical purposes. Historically, it was used by Apple to store legacy Mac OS bitmap fonts, containing rasterized glyphs for specific screen sizes. In the gaming industry, developers like Bugbear Entertainment use .BMAP as proprietary game texture archives for titles like Wreckfest, or by Gameloft for the Asphalt series. Additionally, Linux environments utilize .BMAP files either as binary keyboard layout maps for the console or as XML-based block maps used by bmap-tools to flash sparse disk images efficiently.

Depending on the variant, you might use Fontographer for font editing, community modding unpackers for game assets, or standard Linux kernel tools for system mapping. Because the .BMAP extension is shared among these unrelated formats, generic file viewers will almost always fail to open them.

You need to convert .BMAP files because of this extreme fragmentation and obsolescence. Legacy Mac bitmap fonts are entirely incompatible with modern web browsers and Windows systems. Game texture archives require specialized extraction just to view the internal images, creating a major roadblock for modders. XML block maps are highly specific to system administration and useless for general viewing.

For typography, convert font .BMAP files to modern vector formats like TTF or OTF (note that bitmap quality cannot inherently scale like a vector, so conversion may require tracing). To edit game assets, unpack the textures to PNG or DDS. For Linux disk mapping, save the file as XML to ensure cross-platform readability.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BMAP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FOG, SFN, FMP and OTF files.

The BMAP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BMAP converter.
