How to convert your FLI file

About FLI files

The .FLI file extension is most historically significant as the FLIC Animation format, a legacy video standard originally developed by Autodesk for their DOS-based Autodesk Animator software. These files were the standard for animated sequences in early 90s PC games and multimedia applications.

A key problem with .FLI files today is obsolescence. They are strictly limited to a resolution of 320x200 pixels and a 256-color palette, making them look blocky and "retro" on modern high-DPI displays. Furthermore, standard media players like Windows Media Player or QuickTime dropped support for FLIC animations decades ago, meaning you cannot simply double-click to watch them. While tools like VLC Media Player or FFmpeg can sometimes decode them, playback is often choppy or fails due to missing codecs.

Conversion Advice:

• For Web & Sharing: Convert .FLI to GIF or WebP. Since FLIC files are often short loops with low color depth, they translate perfectly to animated GIFs.
• For Archiving: Convert to MP4 (H.264) or AVI. This preserves the sequence in a format that will remain accessible, though you should expect the video to remain small and pixelated unless upscaled.

Important Note: A significant portion of modern .FLI files are actually Firmware Load Images for satellite receivers using ALi Corporation chipsets (e.g., generic Set-Top Boxes). These are binary data blobs, not videos. If your file is less than 4MB and came with a receiver update, it cannot be converted to video; it must be flashed to the specific hardware device via USB.
