About FLI files

The .FLI file extension primarily represents a FLIC Animation, an obsolete video format developed in the early 1990s by Autodesk Animator. It is strictly limited to a 320x200 resolution and a 256-color palette. Alternatively, it is widely used as a Firmware Load Image for updating satellite receivers and set-top boxes powered by ALi Corporation chipsets. In rare instances, it acts as a digital flipchart for Promethean ActivInspire or note files from Wacom Bamboo Paper.

Because the FLIC animation format is decades old, it is completely unsupported by modern web browsers, smartphones, and mainstream media players. It also lacks audio support entirely. Meanwhile, firmware .FLI files are proprietary binary blobs; attempting to open them in a standard program yields unreadable gibberish, and they require specialized serial flashing tools to execute. These limitations make working with .FLI files highly frustrating on modern systems.

To use an animation file today, you must convert it. For broad web and mobile playback, convert .FLI to MP4. If you want a lightweight looping animation for a website, convert to GIF. For archival editing in legacy software, convert to AVI. Note that upscaling a 320x200 source file will result in heavy pixelation.
