About FLD files
The .FLD extension is a classic example of a 'collision' format - a generic filename used by completely different industries for unrelated purposes. Primarily, it serves as an Electromagnetic Field Simulation Data file generated by high-end engineering platforms like Ansys HFSS or Ansys Maxwell. In this context, the file contains complex 3D vector field data used to simulate antenna design or electronics, often stored in proprietary binary structures that are impossible to read without a license costing thousands of dollars.
However, users frequently encounter .FLD files in other technical domains. In scientific visualization, AVS/Express uses standard field files (often ASCII text) to define data grids for rendering. In the geospatial and surveying sectors, software like Carlson SurvCADD or 12d Model uses .FLD files to store survey field codes and coordinate geometry. There is even a usage within the AgGateway ADAPT framework for agricultural data.
The primary difficulty for .FLD users is this ambiguity and proprietary lock-in. An Ansys simulation file cannot be opened by a text editor, and a survey file is useless in a simulation viewer. To make this data usable, the best strategy is conversion based on the file's origin:
For Data Analysis: Convert simulation or AVS field data to CSV or Excel to parse the raw numbers.
For Visualization: Convert scientific fields to VTK (for ParaView) or Tecplot.
For Surveying/CAD: Convert survey field files to DXF or DWG for use in AutoCAD or Civil 3D.
For Archiving: Convert text-based headers (AVS) to PDF or TXT to preserve the metadata structure.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FLD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted LFLD, FCL, XML, MMO, IVT and PLD files.
FAQ
If you want to convert FLD file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Ansys HFSS or similar software from the "Electromagnetic Simulation Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to FLD, try Ansys HFSS or another comparable tool in the "Electromagnetic Simulation Data" category.
The FLD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FLD converter.
