Convert a file to PDS
To convert other file formats to the "Video Project / CAD Design" file type, you need software like CyberLink PowerDirector or a similar tool.
About PDS files
The .PDS extension typically represents a project file created by CyberLink PowerDirector, a popular non-linear video editing suite. These files are essentially instructions (often XML-based) that reference audio, video, and image assets located on your local storage, rather than containing the media itself. A common frustration for users is attempting to play a .PDS file on a media player like VLC or uploading it to YouTube, only to find it unrecognized. Because the file does not store actual video data, it is useless without the original source media and the proprietary software to interpret the timeline.
A secondary but significant use of the .PDS format is within the fashion industry, generated by Optitex CAD software for pattern design. These vector-based files define 2D fabric patterns for apparel manufacturing. Like the video project variant, Optitex files are deeply proprietary, creating friction when sharing designs with manufacturers or clients who lack expensive license seats. Opening these files without specific CAD tools is nearly impossible.
Best Conversion Targets:
For Video Projects: You cannot "convert" the project file directly without the source assets. You must open it in CyberLink PowerDirector and use the "Produce" function to render a standalone MP4 (H.264) for web compatibility or MOV for high-quality archiving.
For CAD Patterns: To share designs with non-industry stakeholders, converting Optitex PDS to PDF allows for easy viewing and plotting. For interoperability with other CAD systems (like AutoCAD), converting to DXF or .AAMA is the industry standard workflow.
For NASA Data: Scientific PDS (Planetary Data System) files should be converted to JPG or standard raster formats for public visualization.

The PDS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PDS converter.
