The .fid file extension is highly fragmented and represents several completely distinct formats. Primarily, it functions as a dSYM UUID mapping file used by developers in Apple Xcode to symbolicate iOS crash reports, or as an internal framework file for FileMaker Pro. In the scientific community, it represents a Free Induction Decay data file generated by Varian/Agilent NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectroscopy systems. Additionally, Adobe Photoshop Elements uses .fid files to store face recognition thumbnails, which are often just renamed JPG images.
Handling .fid files is exceptionally frustrating because the extension alone does not guarantee a specific internal format. NMR spectroscopy files require highly specialized, expensive software like Mnova to open and read. Apple mapping files are completely useless outside of the Apple development ecosystem. Users often encounter a .fid file on their hard drive and cannot determine if it contains raw science data, an image thumbnail, or developer text strings.
Converting a .fid file heavily depends on its origin. If it is an NMR data file, it is often structured internally as a standard ZIP archive; renaming the extension allows you to extract the raw text and data files. Photoshop Elements .fid files can usually be renamed to JPG to view the image. Standard online converters fail to process .fid files because they lack the logic to differentiate between these conflicting proprietary structures.
