About FH4 files

A .FH4 file is a vector drawing created by Macromedia FreeHand 4, a professional illustration tool released in 1994. These files contain scalable vector paths, text, and raster images used for page layout and graphic design during the mid-90s.

The main problem with .FH4 files is abandonware lock-in. Adobe acquired Macromedia in 2005 and discontinued FreeHand in 2007. While early versions of Adobe Illustrator (CS2–CS5) included import filters for FreeHand files, Illustrator CC and later versions have completely removed support for legacy formats like FH4. Users attempting to open these files today often face "Unknown file format" errors or are forced to install obsolete software on virtual machines just to access their data.

For modern workflows, the best approach is conversion. To archive the visual appearance, convert to PDF. For editable vector data, convert to EPS or AI (often requiring an intermediate converter or legacy software bridge). LibreOffice Draw is one of the few modern, free tools that maintains partial read-support for the format.
