About FH4 files

The .FH4 file is a legacy vector graphics format created by Macromedia FreeHand 4, released in 1994. It stores 2D vector layouts, typography, and illustrations. Historically, these files were opened using Macromedia FreeHand, a dominant design tool of the 1990s.

The massive disadvantage of the .FH4 format today is obsolescence. After Adobe acquired Macromedia, FreeHand was entirely discontinued. Modern vector editors, including current releases of Adobe Illustrator, do not support .FH4 natively. Trying to open these files locally usually requires maintaining a virtual machine running a 20-year-old operating system or hunting down legacy software like Illustrator CS6.

To salvage your designs, conversion is your only practical option. For modern editing, convert the file to SVG or AI. For archiving and sharing, convert to PDF. For commercial printing workflows, EPS remains a solid choice.
