About FHC files

The .fhc extension is a dual-use format shared by two distinct industries: fire protection engineering and genealogy.

Most commonly, a .fhc file is a Fire Hydraulic Calculation project created by Canute FHC. This file acts as a proprietary database storing the complete hydraulic model of a fire sprinkler system, including pipe networks, node data, pump curves, and source pressures.

The Problem: Because .fhc files are specialized engineering datasets, they are binary or structured text files that cannot be opened by standard text editors, CAD software (like AutoCAD), or web browsers. They are strictly "source" files meant for the Canute environment. You cannot simply "convert" them online without the underlying calculation engine to interpret the physics data.

The Solution:

For Engineering: To share this data with architects or clients, you must open the file in Canute FHC and use the built-in export tools. For CAD integration, export the model to DXF (Drawing Exchange Format). For documentation, generate a Calculation Report and print it to PDF.

Less frequently, a .fhc file represents a Family Historian Chart, a saved diagram layout from Family Historian by Calico Pie.

The Problem: This file saves the visual layout of a family tree (colors, box positions, styles), not the genealogical data itself. Relatives without the software cannot view these files.

For Genealogy: Use Family Historian to export the chart as a PDF for printing or a high-resolution JPG or PNG image for email sharing.
