About FFF files

The .FFF file extension serves two distinct, high-value professional purposes, creating a unique challenge for users attempting to open them.

Most commonly (42%), an .FFF file is a Simplify3D Factory File. This is a container format used by Simplify3D software to store a complete 3D printing project, including the 3D models (STLs), process settings, support structures, and print bed configurations. While powerful, these files are proprietary. You cannot open them in other slicers like Ultimaker Cura or view the geometry without owning a Simplify3D license. Users often need to convert the internal data to STL for geometry portability or XML to analyze the print settings in a text editor.

Alternatively, .FFF files are Hasselblad RAW images (often called 3F files). These contain uncompressed, high-fidelity sensor data from Hasselblad digital backs or scanners. The files are massive and incompatible with standard web viewers or basic photo apps. To edit or share these images, photographers must convert them to DNG (Digital Negative) for broad compatibility with Adobe Photoshop, or to JPG and TIFF for client proofs and publishing. Just drag and drop to determine the format, view, and convert it.
