About RG files

The .rg file extension represents two distinct audio-related formats that often confuse users because neither works in standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player.

  1. Tango Voice Message: Historically generated by the legacy Tango messaging app, these files contain recorded voice notes. They are often proprietary encoded audio containers. Users typically encounter them when recovering old backups from Android devices, finding that their cherished voice memories are locked in an unplayable format. To listen to them, they must be converted to a standard format like MP3 or WAV.
  2. Rosegarden Project File: Created by Rosegarden, a digital audio workstation for Linux. A common issue occurs when a musician sends an .rg file to a friend expecting them to hear a song. However, the file is merely a GZIP-compressed XML map containing MIDI notes, automation, and plugin settings - it contains no actual audio. The recipient cannot "play" this file. The creator must open it in Rosegarden and export it as a WAV or MP3 for listening, or export to MIDI for editing in other software like Cubase or Logic Pro.

For valid conversion, you must first identify if the file is a compressed project (Rosegarden) or raw audio (Tango).
