About FEATURE files

A .FEATURE file is a plain text document used primarily by Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) frameworks like Cucumber and SpecFlow. These files contain acceptance criteria written in Gherkin, a domain-specific language that uses natural language keywords (Given, When, Then) to describe software behavior. While designed to be human-readable, raw .FEATURE files are often locked away in version control systems or code repositories, making them inaccessible to non-technical stakeholders like Product Owners or Business Analysts. Opening them in standard text editors often results in a loss of syntax highlighting, making the logic difficult to follow. To share these specifications for sign-off or review without requiring an IDE like Visual Studio Code, users frequently need to convert them.
