About FAX files
A .FAX file is typically a raster image format used to store digital facsimiles, originating from the era when fax machines were a primary mode of communication. While approximately 78% of these files are standard TIFF images renamed with a .fax extension (often using CCITT Group 3 or 4 compression), others are proprietary formats generated by legacy software such as GFI FaxMaker, WinFax Pro, or Corel WordPerfect.
The main challenge with .FAX files is their obsolescence and lack of universal support. Modern operating systems and web browsers cannot natively display them, and proprietary variants may require discontinued software to open. Users often face issues with multi-page files being read as single pages or strictly black-and-white bitonal limitations. To modernize these records, the best solution is converting them to PDF for archiving (maintaining multi-page structure), TIFF for high-fidelity master copies, or PNG for easy viewing on web and mobile devices. Using convert.guru allows you to bypass the need for specific legacy drivers by automatically detecting the underlying structure and converting it to a usable format.

The FAX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FAX converter.
