About FAX files

A .FAX file is typically a raster image created by faxing software or physical fax machines. These files are almost always structurally identical to TIFF images, compressed using Group 3 or Group 4 algorithms optimized for 1-bit black-and-white data. Historically, they were generated by tools like Windows Fax and Scan, WinFax Pro, or GFI FaxMaker. Because the extension is broadly used for any fax output, a .FAX file might also be a disguised PDF generated by utilities like PDFCreator.

The main disadvantage of the .FAX format is its severe lack of modern compatibility. Web browsers, built-in operating system image viewers, and mobile devices generally do not recognize the .FAX extension natively. Users frequently hit "unsupported file type" errors, making it frustrating to open, share, or archive these documents in a modern digital workspace.
