The .EPM file extension primarily represents two highly specialized data formats. In the healthcare sector, it functions as an Exported Physical Exam Template used by Greenway Health's Prime Suite Electronic Health Record (EHR) software. In the financial sector, it acts as an EMV Card Personalization File used by Thales Gemalto CardWizard to securely configure smart cards. The EMV variant is structured internally as an encrypted ZIP archive, typically managed via the EPM-Xplorer utility.
These formats are strictly proprietary and notorious for their lack of interoperability. The medical template cannot be opened in web browsers or competing EHR systems, effectively forcing clinics to maintain expensive Greenway Prime Suite licenses just to read old exam templates. Similarly, the EMV card files are heavily encrypted and completely useless without specialized banking hardware and corresponding authorization keys. Users frequently hit a wall when trying to extract the underlying XML, raw text, or configuration data from these closed ecosystems.
Converting .EPM files is the only pragmatic way to make this siloed data accessible. For auditing or archiving medical templates, it is best to extract the text and convert the file to .PDF/A or DOCX. If you are handling an EMV personalization file, extracting the internal ZIP contents to raw XML or TXT is standard practice for data analysis and debugging.
