About EPH files

The .EPH file extension represents a classic file format collision, primarily serving three distinct, highly specialized industries. First, it is an Astronomical Ephemeris data file heavily used by astrophotography platforms like PixInsight and various Telescope Control Systems (TCS). These files contain high-precision orbital coordinates (Right Ascension, Declination, Time) for tracking celestial bodies. Because TCS software expects rigid plain-text formatting, even a single stray space or trailing newline can crash the parser, making them frustrating to manually edit.

Second, in the electrical engineering field, EPLAN Electric P8 uses the .EPH extension for project header images. Instead of using standard formats like JPG or PNG, EPLAN encapsulates thumbnails and company logos as proprietary binary blobs. Consequently, standard photo editors like Adobe Photoshop or generic online converters will fail to read them.

Finally, .EPH is utilized by the International GNSS Service (IGS) to distribute precise satellite ephemeris data for GPS and GLONASS navigation. These are highly structured text or binary files that require specialized geodetic software to convert into SP3 or .RINEX formats.

Converting .EPH files is notoriously difficult because standard tools do not know which of the three formats they are handling. Astrophotography and GNSS files risk critical data loss if the coordinate matrices are corrupted during export, while EPLAN files stubbornly lock images inside an undocumented binary shell. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format and inspect the file. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. If our analysis detects an EPLAN header, viewing or conversion to standard images may still be possible, and if it is an ephemeris text file, we can extract the raw text for easy reading.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EPH file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ASO, PTS and PHO files.

The EPH Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EPH converter.
