About EL files

The .EL extension serves two distinct but technical user bases: software developers and e-bike enthusiasts. Primarily, it designates Emacs Lisp source code, a dialect of the Lisp programming language used to customize and extend the GNU Emacs text editor. While these are plain text files, they are deeply tied to the Emacs ecosystem. Users often struggle to share or document these scripts because raw code lacks formatting outside an IDE, and non-developers (or clients) cannot easily view them without installing specific tooling. Conversion to PDF or HTML is the standard workflow for archiving documentation or publishing code snippets with syntax highlighting intact.

In the hardware sector, .EL files are frequently encountered as motor configuration profiles for Bafang e-bike systems. These binary or proprietary text files control parameters like current limits, pedal assist sensitivity, and throttle behavior. The friction here is high: these files are completely unreadable in standard text editors and require the specific Bafang Configuration Tool and a programming cable to interpret or modify. Attempting to open them in Word or Notepad usually results in garbled text or file corruption. Other niche uses include crash logs generated by EurekaLog (often text-based) or compiled Lua scripts for the elMubashir application.

For code and logs, converting to TXT or RTF ensures universal accessibility. For archiving source code, PDF/A is recommended to preserve the visual structure.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EML, ET, XLSX, MUSE, EMACS and ORG files.

The EL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EL converter.
