About EID files

The .EID file extension is primarily used for Belgian Electronic Identity Data files generated by the official Belgian Government eID software. These files securely store personal identification information read from a physical eID smart card. The extension is also shared by other applications, most notably ExamView Internet Test files and Laminex PC/IDepot project archives.

The standard Belgian .EID file is a highly specialized data container that requires the official eID Middleware to be read properly. Some variations rely on standard data structures underneath. For example, ExamView test files utilize the Microsoft Compound format, while Laminex ID project archives are simply renamed ZIP archives holding images and database entries.

The main disadvantage of .EID files is their proprietary and restrictive nature. You cannot open a standard Belgian eID file with a regular text editor or web browser. ExamView files require a paid license for specific testing software, locking your educational content into a closed ecosystem. Laminex archives bind your ID card designs and employee data to legacy software. Standard online converters almost always fail to process .EID files because they lack the specific decoding libraries required for these completely different formats.

Converting .EID files depends heavily on their underlying type. Belgian ID files might be parsed into XML or TXT to extract raw text data. ExamView files are best exported from their native software to DOCX or PDF for universal viewing. Laminex project archives can usually be renamed and extracted using WinZip to retrieve the raw raster images and data tables. Note that extracting raw data often removes the security signatures and breaks the original software's ability to read the file.

This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary format heavily tied to specific hardware and legacy software. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Our platform can inspect the file and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EID file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
