The .dwp extension represents three distinct file types, often causing confusion. The most common (52%) is the DirectWave Sampler Preset used by Image-Line FL Studio. These files store instrument data (zone settings, velocity layers) for the DirectWave plugin. A major limitation is that .dwp files are proprietary; they cannot be opened directly in other DAWs like Ableton Live or Logic Pro without conversion. Furthermore, unless saved as "Monolithic," the .dwp file is just a small text map referencing external samples - if those sample files are missing, the .dwp is useless.
For audio professionals, the goal is typically converting these presets into universal formats like SF2 (SoundFont), SFZ, or raw WAV samples for use in other samplers like Native Instruments Kontakt.
Less commonly, a .dwp file may be an ABB DriveWindow Parameter file (24%) used to configure industrial automation drives, or a legacy Microsoft SharePoint Web Part (5%). ABB files are strictly for machinery configuration, while SharePoint files are XML definitions for outdated web dashboards.
