About DWK files
Most .DWK files are DocuWare database configuration files, structured internally as standard XML. These files define critical indexing, storage, and retrieval rules for the DocuWare document management system.
The Problem: Proprietary Obscurity
While the underlying data is human-readable XML, the .DWK extension often disassociates the file from standard text editors. Users attempting to open these files directly often encounter "unknown file format" errors or are forced to launch the heavy DocuWare administrative suite just to view a few lines of configuration code. Additionally, in engineering environments, a .DWK file might actually be a temporary AutoCAD lock file, created to prevent simultaneous editing. These lock files can persist after a software crash, preventing users from opening their actual drawings.
The Solution: Practical Conversion
For DocuWare files, the best workflow is converting to standard formats:
For Editing/Inspection: Convert to XML or TXT. This restores compatibility with lightweight editors like Notepad++ or VS Code.
For Archiving: Convert to PDF. This creates a unalterable snapshot of your server configuration settings, perfect for compliance audits or system documentation.
*Note: If your file is 0KB or found alongside a CAD drawing, it is likely a lock file. Do not convert it; simply delete it if the host application is closed.*
Convert.Guru analyzes your DWK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The DWK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DWK converter.
