About DLT files
The .DLT file extension most commonly represents the Diagnostic Log and Trace format, a standard defined by AUTOSAR and the GENIVI Alliance (now COVESA) for automotive software debugging. These files store high-speed binary log messages from Electronic Control Units (ECUs) in modern vehicles. While critical for analyzing system behavior, .DLT files present significant hurdles: they are binary-encoded (not human-readable), often exceed hundreds of megabytes, and frequently require external FIBEX or XML configuration files to interpret verbose messages. Without specialized tools like DLT Viewer, the data is inaccessible to standard text editors or spreadsheet software. For data analysis, engineers typically need to convert .DLT to CSV for viewing in Microsoft Excel or to TXT and JSON for ingestion into log analytics platforms like Splunk.
A secondary, less common use of the extension is for Autodesk 3ds Max final render plugins. These are executable libraries (similar to .DLLs) that add rendering capabilities to the software; they are system files that cannot be "opened" or converted for editing.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DLT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted DTL, TXT, NPZ, EXE, RCRM, TRACEX, METRICLOG and CSV files.
The DLT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DLT converter.
