About DIM files

The .DIM file extension is heavily fragmented, meaning it acts as a container for several completely unrelated formats. Most commonly, it functions as a disk image file. This includes vintage floppy disk dumps for the Sharp X68000 computer emulator, sector-by-sector backup images created by Active@ Disk Image, and even raw NTFS disk images. Outside of disk imaging, .DIM files store active downloads from Download Master, vehicle ECU tuning data for Dimsport hardware, and Earth Observation metadata in the DIMAP format (which is structurally XML).

The main disadvantage of the .DIM format is its severe ambiguity. Because so many different applications claim the extension, operating systems rarely know how to open it by default. Proprietary disk backups like those from Active@ lock you into their paid software ecosystem, making disaster recovery difficult if you lack a license or a Windows environment. Emulator disk images often require obscure, outdated software to mount. Metadata .DIM files are easier to handle if they are plain text, but binary data files like those from Tekla Structures or AutoCAD remain strictly tied to expensive CAD software.

To overcome these software locks, conversion is the most practical solution. For disk backups, extracting or converting the .DIM file to a standard ISO or raw IMG format ensures compatibility with universal mounting tools and modern operating systems. If your file is DIMAP satellite metadata or Microsoft SQL dimension data, converting to standard XML or CSV is best for web use and readability.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DIM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BIN, ZIP, ISK, KGP, CBM and D88 files.

The DIM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DIM converter.
