About DIM files
A .dim file is a container format that typically serves one of three distinct purposes, often leading to confusion. Most frequently (approx. 31%), it is a Sharp X68000 Disk Image, a bit-perfect copy of a floppy disk used by emulators for the classic Japanese computer. These files act as virtual floppies, locking the data inside a binary blob that modern operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS cannot mount or read natively. Alternatively, a .dim file may be a proprietary backup created by Active@ Disk Image, containing a snapshot of a hard drive for disaster recovery. In scientific circles, it might also be a DIMAP header file (XML) storing metadata for satellite imagery used by SNAP.
The main difficulty with .dim files is their opacity; users often possess these files without the specific legacy software or expensive proprietary tools required to open them. For Sharp X68000 images, the best solution is converting the file to a standard raw disk format like IMG or ISO, allowing you to mount the image and extract specific games or documents. For Active@ backups, converting to a raw disk image helps in recovering data without the original host software. If the file is text-based (DIMAP), converting the XML content to PDF or TXT makes the metadata human-readable.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DIM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DIM file to CBM, D88, BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ or 7Z, you can use Active@ Disk Image or similar software from the "Legacy Disk Image Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to DIM, try Active@ Disk Image or another comparable tool in the "Legacy Disk Image Storage" category.
The DIM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DIM converter.
