About D88 files
The .D88 file is a legacy floppy disk image format primarily used to replicate software from the NEC PC-8801 and PC-9801 retro computer systems. In rare cases, it is also used as a Toshiba Pasopia 7 disk file. These files act as a digital twin of an entire physical floppy disk, capturing not just the files, but the specific disk sectors, tracks, and file system formats used in 1980s Japanese home computing.
Modern operating systems cannot natively mount or open .D88 files. Attempting to open one on Windows or macOS will result in an error, as the internal file systems (like early FAT variants or custom DOS formats) are completely obsolete. To access the data, you are forced to use specialized emulator software like Neko Project II or third-party extraction tools like DiskExplorer (EditDisk).
If you simply need the files stored inside, converting the entire disk image is often the wrong approach. It is better to extract the contents into modern formats like TXT or PNG. If you need to migrate the disk image for a different emulator, converting .D88 to standard raw IMG, FDI, or DSK is recommended, though you may lose specific PC-98 sector header metadata during the conversion.
Because .D88 is a proprietary, undocumented format from decades ago, standard online converters fail to process it. They do not understand the custom 688-byte file header or the obsolete track layouts. If our analysis detects standard embedded files within the disk sectors, viewing or extraction may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your D88 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The D88 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our D88 converter.
