Convert BLAST to another file type

To convert BLAST alignments to another format, you need NCBI BLAST+ or other Data software.

Convert a file to BLAST

To convert other file formats to the "Bioinformatics Search Result" file type, you need software like NCBI BLAST+ or a similar tool.

About BLAST files

A .blast file typically contains the results of a biological sequence alignment performed using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) from the NCBI. These files are essential in bioinformatics for comparing primary biological sequence information, such as the amino-acid sequences of proteins or the nucleotides of DNA and RNA sequences.

While .blast files often contain valuable scientific data, they present significant usability challenges outside of specialized environments. The file is frequently generated as a raw, fixed-width text report intended for command-line parsing or specific viewers like BioEdit. Opening them in standard word processors can break the formatting, making the alignment visuals unintelligible. Furthermore, importing these files into data analysis tools like Microsoft Excel is tedious because the data is not naturally delimited by commas or tabs. For analysis, it is highly recommended to convert .blast files to CSV or XLSX to filter by E-value and identity percentage. For documentation and sharing research, converting to PDF ensures the alignment spacing remains fixed across different operating systems.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BLAST file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DICTIONARY, DEAD and EXE2 files.

FAQ

If you want to convert BLAST file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use NCBI BLAST+ or similar software from the "Bioinformatics Sequence Alignment" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to BLAST, try NCBI BLAST+ or another comparable tool in the "Bioinformatics Sequence Alignment" category.

The BLAST Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BLAST converter.
