About BITMAP files
The .BITMAP file extension primarily denotes an internal character set bitmap data file used by the Apple Core Foundation framework on macOS. These files store rasterized glyphs and typography data for legacy software and operating system functions. Occasionally, developers also use this extension to dump raw, headerless pixel data during application debugging.
Because these files are highly specific to the Apple ecosystem or act as raw binary dumps, standard consumer image viewers like Adobe Photoshop or Windows Photos will usually fail to open them. The primary disadvantage of a .BITMAP file is its proprietary or non-standard structure. It lacks the universal headers found in modern image formats, meaning web browsers cannot render it, and it cannot be directly shared or edited without specialized developer tools.
If you need to extract and view the visual data inside, you must convert the .BITMAP file to standard web-friendly formats like PNG or JPG. Converting to PNG is ideal because it preserves the transparent backgrounds often associated with font glyphs, though you will lose the proprietary Apple Core Foundation mapping metadata in the process.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary system file. Standard online converters fail to process it because they look for standard image headers that do not exist here. However, you can drag and drop your file into convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BITMAP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert BITMAP file to SVG, JPEG, ICON or PDF, you can use Apple macOS or similar software from the "Character Set Bitmap Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The BITMAP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BITMAP converter.
