About DDX files
A .DDX file primarily functions as a proprietary game texture asset file used in titles like Halo Wars 2 or game engines from Bethesda Game Studios. In gaming contexts, it stores modified DirectDraw Surface data. Alternatively, .DDX files act as database index files for Data Access Worldwide DataFlex, or as an XML data exchange format for Adobe and Autodesk software. Some legacy systems also use it as an Alpha Five Data Dictionary Index or a Windows device driver file. These formats are highly fragmented and completely incompatible with each other. Users struggle with .DDX files because they are tightly locked to their parent applications. Gaming textures are usually packed in obscure binary containers, meaning standard image viewers cannot read them. Database index files do not contain the actual database records, just the organizational structure, making them useless outside of the host database environment. Conversion targets depend heavily on the specific file type. Gaming .DDX files are best converted to standard DDS, PNG, or TGA for modding and 3D modeling using tools like NifSkope. XML-based data exchange files can simply be saved as XML or TXT. Because the .DDX extension represents multiple closed, proprietary formats, standard online converters usually fail to process it.
