About DBG files

The .DBG file extension is primarily used for Debug files. These files store diagnostic logs, crash reports, or debugging symbols generated by dozens of completely unrelated hardware and software systems. Common generators include Fortinet FortiAuthenticator, Ruckus Networks wireless controllers, the MediaTek Android AEE framework, and the GNU Project Debugger (GDB). Because the extension simply stands for 'debug,' there is no universal standard for its internal format.

The main disadvantage of the .DBG format is its extreme fragmentation. A .DBG file could be plain text, UTF-16 encoded strings, a GZIP or ZIP compressed archive, a compiled ELF symbol file, or even an encrypted proprietary log (like those from Duo Security). Operating systems cannot automatically determine how to open them. If you try to open a binary .DBG file in a standard text editor like Windows Notepad, it will often crash the application or display unreadable gibberish. Users frequently struggle to identify which software created the file or how to extract readable diagnostic data for IT support.

To make these files readable across all devices, you must identify and convert them. For basic log analysis, convert text-based .DBG files to TXT or LOG. If you need to share a crash report with a vendor or IT department, convert the readable data to PDF for guaranteed, unalterable formatting. For compressed variants, the internal data must be extracted first. We will identify the file signature and help you extract the underlying information securely.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DBG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DMP, LOG, ZIP, DSW, PDB and INL files.

The DBG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DBG converter.
