About DA0 files

The .DA0 file extension is a legacy Windows Registry Backup File historically used by Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME. It typically exists as USER.DA0 or SYSTEM.DA0, functioning as an exact, automatically generated replica of the active USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT files upon a successful system boot. These files are managed natively by the operating system. To read or extract data manually, administrators historically relied on the Windows Registry Editor or specialized legacy registry recovery software running on older hardware.

The primary disadvantage of the .DA0 format is its obsolescence and strict proprietary binary structure. It is not plain text, making it completely unreadable in standard text editors. Furthermore, modern versions of Windows (NT, XP, 10, 11) utilize entirely different registry hive structures (e.g., SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE). Because of this architectural shift, modern built-in tools cannot natively mount, read, or repair .DA0 files.

If you need to view the contents of an old registry backup, the ideal conversion targets are a standard REG file or plain TXT. Be aware that directly converting binary registry hives to readable text requires specialized parsers, and you will lose the executable nature of the binary database. Because it is a closed, proprietary, and obsolete format, standard online converters fail to process it. If our analysis detects standard embedded registry data, viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DA0 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DA3, DA6 and DA7 files.

The DA0 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DA0 converter.
