About D3D files

The .d3d extension is a classic example of file format collision, most commonly representing a DesignCAD 3D Model used by IMSI DesignCAD. These files store 3D geometry, wireframes, and surface data for architectural or mechanical designs. However, the extension is also heavily used by GameMaker for legacy vertex model storage, by CorelDREAM for 3D scenes, and even by Insight Numerics Detect3D for fire mapping projects.

The primary friction users encounter is ambiguous ownership: a .d3d file created in a game engine is completely unreadable by CAD software, and vice versa. Furthermore, modern 3D suites like Blender or Maya do not natively support importing DesignCAD or GameMaker source files, leaving your 3D assets locked inside specific, often older environments.

For 3D printing or use in modern rendering engines, the best approach is to convert .d3d files to standard interchange formats. For geometry preservation, convert to OBJ or STL. If you need to retain CAD vector data for further engineering, DXF or DWG are the optimal targets.

Convert.Guru analyzes your D3D file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted D3DTX, G3D, MTL, TXT, MDMP and DMP files.

FAQ

If you want to convert D3D file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use DesignCAD or similar software from the "3D CAD Model" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to D3D, try DesignCAD or another comparable tool in the "3D CAD Model" category.

The D3D Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our D3D converter.
