About D3D files
The .D3D file extension is notoriously fragmented, serving as a container for 3D geometry, scenes, and CAD models across at least ten entirely different software ecosystems. The most common variants include 3D CAD models generated by DesignCAD or TopSolid'Wood, 3D scene descriptions from legacy programs like CorelDREAM 3D, and 3D object files used in GameMaker. Other specialized uses range from fire and gas mapping projects in Detect3D (often utilizing GZIP compression) to landscape designs in DATAflor.
Because .D3D is highly proprietary and unstandardized, it is a problematic format for modern workflows. If you receive a .D3D file, you cannot easily tell which software created it. Attempting to open a GameMaker .D3D file in DesignCAD will result in an immediate error. Furthermore, many of these files are locked to legacy 32-bit software and are entirely unsupported by modern web browsers or standard operating system viewers, trapping your 3D assets inside niche environments.
To make these files usable, conversion is almost always required. For broad 3D editing and 3D printing, convert to STL or OBJ. For game engines like Unity or Unreal, FBX is the industry standard. For web deployment, GLTF or GLB provide the best performance. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your D3D file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert D3D file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use DesignCAD or similar software from the "3D Model and Scene Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to D3D, try DesignCAD or another comparable tool in the "3D Model and Scene Storage" category.
The D3D Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our D3D converter.
