About CXS files

A .cxs file typically functions as a 3D molecular session file for UCSF ChimeraX or a custom user interface skin package for the 3CX Phone System.

In scientific workflows, .cxs files store saved states, structural coordinates, and visualization parameters of molecular models. These files are often compressed using GZIP to reduce the size of the complex chemical data. In telecommunications, a .cxs file contains graphical assets used to change the appearance of the 3CX desktop VoIP client.

The main disadvantage of the .cxs format is its extreme proprietary lock-in. A ChimeraX session cannot be directly opened in web browsers or standard 3D modeling tools without specialized export steps. Similarly, 3CX skins are often locked to specific software versions and are useless outside of that ecosystem. Some 3CX skins are even packaged as executables (EXE), which poses a security risk if sent via email.

To share molecular visualizations with non-scientists, you must convert the data. For web use or standard 3D editing, convert the models to GLTF or OBJ. For simple archiving and presentations, export the view to a PNG image or PDF document. If you need to inspect the underlying assets of a 3CX skin or analyze a ChimeraX session without installing the software, drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CXS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CSX, USR, ANOM and VEH files.

The CXS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CXS converter.
