Extract text from CUF files

The .CUF file extension primarily represents a proprietary game font format used by Creative Assembly in their Total War series. These files dictate how text interfaces appear within the game engine, replacing standard system fonts to fit the historical or thematic aesthetic of titles like Rome II or Attila.
Because .CUF files are specialized binary containers for glyph bitmaps or vectors specific to the game engine, they are incompatible with standard design software like Adobe Illustrator or Microsoft Word. You cannot simply double-click to install them on Windows or macOS. Modders often face significant friction here; editing the game's typography requires converting the .CUF into a standard TTF (TrueType) or OTF (OpenType) format using community-developed tools like the Pack File Manager (PFM). Conversely, creating a custom font for the game requires converting a TTF back into .CUF, often involving complex mapping of character codes to game-specific identifiers.
Warning for Car Owners: A significant portion of .CUF files are firmware update packages for Kenwood and Honda navigation receivers. In this context, the file is a compressed binary system update. Do not attempt to convert or open this file. Modifying a firmware .CUF file can brick your head unit. The correct workflow for these files is to copy them directly to the root directory of a FAT32-formatted USB drive for the device to read.
