About CSB files

The .csb file extension primarily identifies the Cocos Studio Binary format, a compiled resource used by the Cocos2d-x game engine. Originally generated by the now-discontinued Cocos Studio, these files store user interface (UI) layouts, skeletal animations, and scene structures in a serialized binary format for efficient loading during gameplay.

While efficient for machines, .csb files present significant challenges for developers and modders. As a flat binary format using Google's FlatBuffers, they are not human-readable or editable in standard text editors. Furthermore, because Cocos Studio is deprecated, opening legacy projects often requires migrating content to Cocos Creator or reverse-engineering the binary data. Users frequently encounter these files when attempting to mod mobile games or update legacy codebases. A secondary but common use of the .csb extension is for CRIWARE Sound Banks (Common Source Bank), used to package audio assets in video games.

For developers needing to inspect or modify scene data, the optimal workflow is converting .csb to JSON or XML. This restores readability and allows for data parsing or migration to modern engines like Unity or Godot. For users dealing with game audio (CRIWARE), the goal is typically extraction to standard audio formats like WAV or MP3 for listening or editing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CSB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CSV, XLSX, PLIST, P7M, ZIP, PNG, MP3, LUA, PSB, DOCX, PDF, SLDASM and CDW files.

The CSB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CSB converter.
