About CRSWAP files

A .CRSWAP file is a temporary, partial download file created by Google Chrome and other Chromium-based web browsers (like Edge, Brave, and Opera). When you initiate a download, the browser creates this placeholder to store data chunks as they arrive over the network. Once the download completes successfully, the browser automatically removes the .CRSWAP extension, revealing the true file format, such as a ZIP archive or an MP4 video.

Users typically encounter these files when a download stalls, fails, or is paused. Because a .CRSWAP file is inherently incomplete, it presents significant conversion challenges. It lacks standard end-of-file (EOF) markers and complete file headers, meaning standard media players, archive tools, and traditional online converters will reject it outright. The file is literally "cut off" in the middle of its data stream.

You generally cannot convert a .CRSWAP file into a new format. Instead, the goal is to recover the original target format (like PDF, ZIP, or MP4). In many cases, if a video download was 90% complete, simply renaming the file to remove the .crswap extension will allow media players like VLC to play the partial video. For incomplete ZIP or 7Z archives, tools like 7-Zip might successfully extract the files that downloaded before the connection dropped.

Because this is a temporary, incomplete holding format, standard online converters fail to process it. Our system analyzes the binary signature to detect the underlying embedded format (such as an incomplete MP4 or PDF) and allows you to inspect the raw data to see if recovery is viable.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CRSWAP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MP4, LL0003_, ZIP, PNG, PDF, MKV, TS, WAV, MTL, PKPASS, XAPK, TSX and ACSM files.

The CRSWAP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CRSWAP converter.
