About CIP files
The .cip extension is shared by several distinct technical formats, creating frequent compatibility challenges. Most commonly, it represents a Symbol-based Communication Document created by Widgit Communicate (formerly InPrint). These files combine text with visual symbols to aid accessible reading but are strictly proprietary; they require specific paid software to open, making them difficult to share with parents, teachers, or colleagues who do not possess a license. To overcome this lock-in, users typically convert these files to PDF or JPG for universal viewing.
Alternatively, a .cip file may be a Code Integrity Policy binary used by Microsoft Windows Defender and Device Guard. These system files define trusted drivers and applications but are not human-readable in their binary state, often requiring conversion to XML for auditing or editing. Other notable uses include Cavena Subtitles, used in broadcasting, which are incompatible with standard media players like VLC. For video use, these must be converted to standard caption formats like SRT or VTT.

The CIP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CIP converter.
