Convert a file to COOL

To convert other file formats to the "Encrypted File / HDF5 Matrix" file type, you need software like cooler or a similar tool.

About COOL files

A .cool file is most frequently a file that has been encrypted by ransomware families such as Phobos, STOP/Djvu, MedusaLocker, or GandCrab. In these cases, a user's standard files (like JPG, PDF, ZIP, or EXE) are locked with high-grade encryption, and the .cool extension is appended to the original filename. Alternatively, in the scientific community, a .cool file is a genomic interaction contact matrix based on the HDF5 standard, used by the cooler software package. Finally, it can occasionally be a cached PNG image generated by Cooler Master MasterPlus+ or a legacy MP3 audio file from Cool Edit Pro.

Users typically attempt to convert .cool files because they are completely inaccessible. Ransomware-encrypted files cannot be opened by any standard application, and the original software cannot read the scrambled binary data. The severe disadvantage of this format is that it requires a private decryption key to reverse the encryption; standard file conversion is impossible for these locked files. For genomic .cool files, the HDF5 structure is highly specialized and requires Python scripting to extract data into human-readable formats like CSV or TSV.

Because this extension covers encrypted blobs, complex scientific binaries, and hidden raster images, standard online converters fail to process it. You cannot simply "convert" ransomware back to a PDF. However, just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal binary signature, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like an unencrypted cached PNG or an MP3 file - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your COOL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TPL, CMYK, ASE and HIC files.

The COOL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our COOL converter.
