The .COF extension is a classic source of confusion because it serves two completely different masters: professional photographers and embedded systems engineers.
Most commonly, a .COF file is a proprietary setting sidecar created by Capture One (formerly known as Phase One). These files do not contain the actual image data. Instead, they store the metadata and adjustment instructions (like exposure, contrast, and color grading) that you applied to a source RAW image (e.g., CR2, NEF, ARW).
The Friction: Users often attempt to open these files in Windows Photo Viewer or Adobe Photoshop, only to find they are unrecognized or appear as gibberish text. Because the file is merely a recipe of edits, it cannot be converted directly into a JPG or PNG without the original RAW file present.
The Solution: To get a usable image, you must use Capture One to process the original RAW file using the .COF instructions and "Export" the result to JPG (for web), TIFF (for print), or PDF (for contact sheets).
