A .COB file typically serves one of two completely different functions: a COBOL source code script (or compiled binary) or a legacy trueSpace 3D object file.
When used in enterprise software, the .COB format contains code written in COBOL (COmmon Business Oriented Language). Developers use tools like Micro Focus Visual COBOL to manage and compile these files for mainframes. The primary disadvantage here is fragmentation: some .COB files are plain text source code easily readable in any text editor, while others are compiled, machine-readable object files that cannot be reverse-engineered easily. If you need to review the source code on modern devices, convert it to TXT or PDF for easy distribution.
Alternatively, a .COB file is a 3D model created by Caligari trueSpace. Because this software was abandoned in 2009, the format is now heavily outdated, proprietary, and generally unsupported by modern 3D modeling tools or web browsers. Relying on this format risks permanent data loss. To preserve these 3D models, you must convert them to standard formats. For editing in modern software like Blender, convert to OBJ or FBX. For 3D printing applications, convert to STL.
