About CHAR files
The .char file format primarily stores character profiles, 3D model references, or stat configurations for various video games and game engines. Games like Mirage Realms, BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic, and the Elecbyte M.U.G.E.N fighting engine use these files to save player progress, hitboxes, or animation data. Additionally, tools like Ros-Bot for Diablo III save botting profiles as JSON-based .char files, while the Playscii tool uses them for ASCII character set definitions. The main disadvantage of the .char format is severe fragmentation. Because it is highly specific to the game or engine that created it, a .char file from CryEngine is entirely different from one exported by Playscii. Many of these are closed, proprietary binary formats. They lack native support in modern web browsers and cannot be easily opened by standard operating systems without the original game client installed. Users often need to edit character stats, port 3D models, or extract configuration data, but standard text editors will just show garbled text for binary variants. If the file is plaintext or JSON-based, the best conversion targets are standard TXT or JSON files for easy editing. For 3D engine variants, you might seek to extract data to XML or OBJ, though this usually requires specialized modding tools. Standard online converters fail to process .char files because they lack a unified standard. Even if the format is locked, our analysis can often detect supported underlying embedded text or data.
