About CGB files

The .cgb file extension typically represents a Game Boy Color ROM containing a binary dump of a classic Nintendo cartridge. Alternatively, it is used as a compiled CGA rule file by Esri CityEngine for procedural 3D city modeling.

To open the ROM variant, users rely on emulators like VisualBoyAdvance or RetroArch. The 3D rule variant requires an expensive enterprise license for Esri CityEngine.

Both versions of the .cgb file present significant usability challenges. They are highly proprietary, closed-source binary formats. ROM files cannot be directly edited, while CityEngine rule files are compiled, meaning the original readable text logic is hidden. Neither format is supported by modern web browsers or standard operating systems natively.

Standard conversion is mostly impossible. ROM files can sometimes be patched with IPS files, and CityEngine environments can export 3D geometry to OBJ or FBX, but the .cgb file itself cannot be converted to a readable text or standard document format.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because it contains compiled machine code meant for specific vintage hardware or specialized enterprise engines. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if an embedded or supported format is detected.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CGB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CBG, ORC, VSB and BSV files.
