About CEL files
The .CEL file extension primarily denotes an Affymetrix Microarray Intensity Data file. It stores raw fluorescence data extracted from biological samples during genomic research. A secondary but notable use is as a MicroStation Cell Library file by Bentley Systems, which stores reusable 3D CAD components. To open microarray files, scientists rely on Affymetrix Expression Console or R/Bioconductor. CAD variants require MicroStation. The microarray format is highly proprietary, specialized, and often exceeds 100MB per file. It requires deep technical knowledge and complex software environments just to view the data. You cannot natively open it in a web browser or a standard text editor. CAD cell libraries similarly lock users into expensive proprietary CAD ecosystems. For data analysis, convert the microarray .CEL to CSV or TXT to make it accessible in standard data science tools. For CAD sharing, convert to DWG or DXF. If you want to convert CEL file to MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC, APE or WV, you can use Affymetrix GeneChip or similar software from the "Microarray Intensity Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to CEL, try Affymetrix GeneChip or another comparable tool in the "Microarray Intensity Data Storage" category.
The CEL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CEL converter.
